Unpacking the National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill

The National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill represents landmark legislation aimed at transforming healthcare delivery in South Africa. Signed into law in May by President Cyril Ramaphosa, the NHI Bill holds the promise of universal healthcare coverage for all citizens. However, like any significant policy shift, it comes with its share of advantages and challenges.

To unpack the NHI Bill and delve deeper into its implications, the South African Health Technologies Advocacy Coalition (SAHTAC) hosted a webinar discussion. This event aimed to comprehensively assess the pros and cons of the NHI Bill and explore how stakeholders can influence the process.

Held on 22 May 2024, the webinar brought together over 140 stakeholders, including civil society members, academics, researchers, policymakers, media representatives, medical scheme officials, healthcare professionals, and general citizens. The discussion featured a panel of experts who shared insights on the practical implementation and rollout of the NHI.

SAHTAC also presented a call to action regarding the package of care inclusion criteria, highlighting key considerations. Through expert insights and diverse stakeholder perspectives, the discussions provided attendees with a nuanced understanding of the implications of this transformative healthcare legislation.
