In commemoration of the HIV Vaccine Awareness Day (HVAD) 2023, IAVI, via the ADVANCE program, partnered with SAHTAC and The Aurum institute, to host the inaugural regional HVAD conference at the Birchwood Hotel & Or Tambo Conference Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa, on May 30, 2023.
Drawing 131 participants, both in person and online, the event underscored the importance of a concerted effort towards an HIV-free future. The commemoration provided an opportunity to celebrate the ground-breaking science focusing on HIV vaccine research and development and recognizing the various contributions that vaccine research and development have provided humanity regarding global health.
The conference, under the theme “Accelerating the Path to an HIV-Free Future: Collaboration and Innovation in HIV Vaccine Research and Development” aimed to facilitate collaboration and knowledge sharing among stakeholders in HIV vaccine research and development. The conference also aimed at showcasing the current scientific milestones and promoting positive relationships among stakeholders, such as researchers, policymakers, donors, community liaisons, and community members.
